South African Airways will restart a transparent, competitive search for a new strategic equity partner after South Africa’s Cabinet approved the process on 26 August. The move is intended to strengthen the carrier’s balance sheet, improve access to capital and aviation expertise, support fleet renewal and route development, and reduce the state’s financial exposure as SAA seeks to rebuild as a more investable national airline.
The plan forms part of a wider effort to improve connectivity, trade, tourism and economic development in South Africa. SAA has been looking for a partner to help anchor its recovery after years of financial strain and repeated restructuring. The fresh process is expected to open the door to airline investors, including other carriers, as the group continues to seek long-term commercial backing.
Former group chief executive John Lamola has indicated that the airline will keep pursuing a strategic equity partner. The renewed search comes as SAA works to broaden its operational base and secure the capital needed to support growth, while the government seeks a structure that leaves the carrier on a more sustainable footing.
