FAA highlights Elroy Air cargo drone demonstration in Louisiana

The FAA has highlighted a demonstration flight of Elroy Air’s remotely piloted hybrid-electric cargo aircraft at Houma-Terrebonne Airport in Louisiana, part of the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program. The exercise centred on testing the Chaparral cargo system for freight transport, with state partners including the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development involved in the programme.

The activity was framed as operational testing rather than a commercial launch or certification decision. It forms part of the FAA’s effort to gather data on hybrid-electric, remotely piloted cargo aircraft and how they may fit into future U.S. airspace operations.

Houma-Terrebonne Airport has emerged as a key test site for advanced air mobility work in the Gulf Coast region. The programme is designed to inform future integration, procurement and regulatory planning for autonomous cargo operations, while also supporting broader testing of cargo and personnel transport concepts in Louisiana and neighbouring states.
