First production TAI HÜRJET makes maiden flight in Turkey

Turkey’s first production-standard HÜRJET trainer for the Turkish Air Force completed its maiden flight on Sunday, remaining airborne for 18 minutes. The aircraft, built by Turkish Aerospace under the HÜRJET programme, had already undergone final assembly, ground tests and taxi trials before the sortie, moving the jet beyond prototype development and towards delivery configuration.

The flight took place on Victory Day, the 104th anniversary of Türkiye’s 30 August commemorations. HÜRJET began development in 2017 and first flew as a prototype in April 2023. The aircraft is designed as an advanced trainer and light combat jet, with reports linking the type to a General Electric F404 engine and a claimed top speed of Mach 1.4.

The production-standard aircraft is intended for the Turkish Air Force, although no handover has been confirmed. Reports indicate the initial batch is expected to comprise six aircraft, with deliveries planned for 2026 after further testing.
