American Airlines is still selling true premium First Class on some long-haul and transcontinental aircraft, even though the cabin was due to disappear by the end of 2024. The remaining product is concentrated on Boeing 777-300ERs and Airbus A321Ts, with eight First Class seats on the 777-300ER and ten on the A321T, while the airline has already started removing the cabin from the fleet.
The first 777-300ER has now been reconfigured with the new business-class cabin installed and First Class removed. On the A321T side, the cabin is expected to go as those aircraft are replaced by A321XLRs, which do not feature First Class. Tickets remain on sale through the end of the bookable schedule, which currently runs into late summer 2027, but no final cutoff date for sales has been made public.
The slower-than-planned exit reflects delays to A321XLR deliveries and to the 777-300ER retrofit programme. American is also reshaping premium ground service: from 15 September 2026, its Flagship First Dining facility will be renamed and opened to more business-class travellers on eligible long-haul, transcontinental and Hawaii routes.
