Mutinous soldiers attack Niamey airport and presidential district

Mutinous soldiers attacked Diori Hamani International Airport and Niger’s presidency in Niamey on 29 August, triggering hours of gunfire and explosions around the capital’s main air hub and the presidential district. The airport site, which hosts a military air base and serves as a key national gateway, briefly lost state television and radio coverage before broadcasts resumed.

Niger’s defence ministry said security forces were gradually regaining control of the targeted areas after the overnight assault. Later reporting indicated the mutiny had been contained, although the situation around the airport was not immediately clear and some areas remained contested for part of the day.

The incident is the third major disruption at the Niamey airport complex this year, following earlier attacks in January and June that were linked to jihadist violence. That repeated exposure has kept the site under close security scrutiny because of its dual civilian and military role in the capital.
