SpiceJet has suspended Boeing 737 MAX operations amid a capacity crunch, deepening pressure on the Indian carrier’s already constrained network. The move affects its MAX fleet and comes as the airline continues to operate with a reduced number of aircraft while working to restore seat supply and reliability.
Recent reporting has put SpiceJet’s domestic market share at 1.6% in July, its weakest level in more than a decade, as capacity remained limited and several aircraft stayed unavailable for service. The airline has also relied on damp-leased aircraft and other short-term measures to support operations, but those additions have not fully offset the shrinkage in its active fleet.
The suspension underscores the strain on one of India’s best-known low-cost carriers as it faces maintenance backlogs, lease changes and a much smaller operational base than in earlier years. It also adds to ongoing disruption risk across its domestic and international network at a time when competitors have continued to expand capacity.
