Hamburg Airport is investing more than €2 million in electric special vehicles to improve assistance for passengers with reduced mobility, as part of its wider HAM Upgrade modernisation programme. Two electric high-loader vehicles are already in service, with two more due in 2027 to support barrier-free boarding on remote stands.
The new units can transport up to 11 passengers and reach a lifting height of 5.7 metres, allowing direct access to aircraft parked away from terminal gates. They are equipped with a 360-degree camera, additional sensors and a no-touch docking function. The investment follows a rise in demand for assistance, with the number of passengers registering support needs up 14% in the first half of 2026 from a year earlier.
Hamburg Airport has continued to broaden its mobility offering alongside the vehicle rollout, including the addition of specialist electric transport equipment for terminal operations. The airport has previously linked the accessibility upgrades to HAM Upgrade, a programme budgeted at more than €20 million, which also covers wider infrastructure and passenger-service improvements across the airport.
