German investigators have found a third drone linked to the Leipzig/Halle airport incident, along with traces of a substance suspected to be the military explosive Hexogen, west of the airport in Kabelsketal. The discovery, made on 14 August and reported publicly on 25 August, expands the probe into a suspected attack on airport infrastructure involving a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft.
The latest reporting indicates that authorities now believe three drones were involved rather than two, changing the scale of the case under investigation. Around 50 grams of the suspected explosive were found at the Kabelsketal site, but the material did not detonate. The Federal Criminal Police Office and the Federal Prosecutor’s Office are handling the inquiry, while the findings have not yet been confirmed publicly by the authorities.
Leipzig/Halle is one of Germany’s key cargo airports and also supports military logistics, making any drone intrusion a serious aviation-security issue. The new disclosure follows the original 4 August discovery of an explosive-laden drone near the airport, which had already prompted concern over the vulnerability of critical infrastructure.
