TU Berlin Hydra wins DLR design challenge with swappable propulsion modules

TU Berlin’s Hydra concept aircraft has won the anniversary edition of the DLR Design Challenge, drawing attention for a propulsion system that can be reconfigured within a single working day. The small research aircraft is designed with interchangeable modules that allow a switch between fuel-cell propulsion and shaft-power turbines with generators, while using a shared airframe and five propellers on each wing.

The student project is positioned as a realistic flying testbed for future aviation technologies rather than a near-term commercial product. DLR highlighted the modular layout as a way to push flight tests closer to performance limits in areas such as propulsion dynamics and thermal management, while helping validate theoretical models and future certification requirements. The concept is aimed at technologies expected to become relevant for commercial aviation from 2050 onwards, creating a bridge from research to maturity without changing the basic aircraft structure.
