Aermacchi’s MB-339 jet trainer has reached its 50th anniversary, with the first flight of the prototype taking place on 12 August 1976 from the company’s facilities in Venegono, near Varese in northern Italy. The aircraft became one of the most recognisable Italian military types of its era and remains closely associated with the Italian Air Force and the Frecce Tricolori display team.
Designed primarily as a military trainer with a secondary light attack role, the MB-339 entered Italian Air Force service in 1979 and went on to build a long career in national and international service. Around 230 aircraft were produced between the late 1970s and 2006, giving the type a production run that spanned nearly three decades.
The Frecce Tricolori’s use of the MB-339 helped cement its profile well beyond Italy, particularly through the team’s green, white and red smoke displays. The aerobatic unit continues to fly ten MB-339 aircraft, underscoring the type’s enduring visibility even as newer trainers gradually replace it in front-line roles.
