German Transport Minister Steffen Bilger has ordered the rapid deployment of interim Deutsche Flugsicherung drone-detection technology at airports across Germany, targeting the approach and departure zones most exposed to disruption. He made the remarks during a visit to the DFS tower at Frankfurt Airport, where he pressed for faster detection of unmanned aircraft and fewer procedural delays.
Bilger is prioritising speed over lengthy tender processes so airports can be equipped quickly and air traffic better protected. At the country’s largest airports, which are classified as critical infrastructure, installation and procurement work for the new systems is already under way.
Frankfurt Airport has operated a Bundespolizei drone-defence system since the end of 2024, improving detection and reducing the need for operational interruptions. DFS is also pushing for drone-related data to be pooled nationally at a situation centre at its Langen headquarters, while chief executive Arndt Schoenemann wants an integrated drone situational picture for Germany to give critical-infrastructure operators faster response capability.
