Stralis Aircraft has shut down after completing a hydrogen-electric taxi test of its Beechcraft Bonanza A36 demonstrator at Brisbane Airport, as the start-up ran out of funding and could not build a commercial case for hydrogen aviation quickly enough. The closure follows a 29 July 2026 ground run of the company’s Bonnie demonstrator, which had been intended to advance its hydrogen propulsion programme.
The Australian venture had pursued hydrogen-electric flight technology for general aviation, but the business case remained weak and the wider ecosystem for hydrogen aviation has yet to mature. Infrastructure, certification and commercial readiness remained major hurdles, leaving the company unable to secure the capital needed to continue development.
Stralis had presented the taxi test as a technical milestone, but the result did not translate into the investment support required to sustain operations. The shutdown ends the company’s near-term effort to bring hydrogen propulsion into service, despite the demonstrator proving the propulsion system could operate on the ground.
