The FAA has completed hybrid-electric demonstration flights by Electra in partnership with PennDOT and NJDOT, using the EL2 Goldfinch aircraft to test short routes linking smaller regional airports with Philadelphia International Airport and other nearby fields. The programme examined whether short takeoff and landing operations could support feeder connections for regional travel, rather than relying only on major hubs.
The route network included Manassas, Washington Manassas Airport, Millville Executive Airport, Atlantic City Bader Field, Northeast Philadelphia Airport and Philadelphia International Airport. The trials formed part of the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program and were aimed at showing how underused local infrastructure could support direct aviation concepts.
Electra’s hybrid-electric demonstrator was used to assess operational flexibility on short sectors and to gauge how such aircraft might fit into future regional air service models. The flights remained a demonstration effort, with no commercial launch date, fare structure or airline partner disclosed in the material reviewed.
