The Federal Aviation Administration is recruiting video gamers for air traffic controller jobs as part of a wider effort to ease a national staffing shortage in the United States. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has linked the campaign to the agency’s recent hiring momentum, with more than 2,000 controllers brought on and 94% of the annual hiring goal reached.
The outreach is built around the idea that gaming skills such as multitasking, spatial awareness, object tracking and rapid decision-making can translate to tower and radar work. The FAA is targeting younger applicants as it looks to broaden the pool for a safety-critical role that remains heavily screened and trained.
The initiative may help expand recruitment, but it does not provide immediate operational relief. Candidates still have to pass testing, complete academy training and earn certification before they can join the workforce, leaving the broader shortage in place in the near term.
