The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority board has approved a $19.9 billion overhaul of Washington Dulles International Airport, clearing a multi-year programme that includes a $6.2 billion reconstruction of the main terminal. The plan will reshape passenger flow, concourses and transfer links at the airport, which serves the Washington, D.C. region and functions as the area’s primary international gateway.
The wider package also allocates $3.75 billion for new underground tunnels and a replacement for the airport’s slow passenger transfer vehicles. Work on the terminal package is expected to begin in late 2027, while tunnel construction is slated to start in early 2029 and finish by 2034.
The board vote opens the way for a phased capital programme that targets ageing infrastructure at one of the largest hubs in the US capital region. The approved plan does not include several Trump-backed proposals, including a parking garage, hotel and transport centre. The long timeline means the project will affect airline operations and airport capacity gradually over the next decade.
