Lufthansa Group has begun rolling out Starlink-based in-flight internet, with a Lufthansa A320neo entering service on the Frankfurt-Rome route on Wednesday as the first aircraft fitted with the new Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi. The group plans to equip about 850 aircraft across its airlines by 2029, a programme intended to make it Europe’s largest airline group offering this type of onboard connectivity.
The launch aircraft, registered D-AINM, was prepared in Berlin by Lufthansa Technik before operating its inaugural flight. The rollout will extend across Lufthansa Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines and other group carriers as aircraft undergo scheduled technical downtime, allowing the low-Earth-orbit system to be fitted without major disruption to operations.
The service is free for Miles & More members and Travel ID users in all cabins. Lufthansa had already indicated that the first phase would begin in the second half of 2026, with up to ten more A320-family aircraft due to receive the system later this year. The group has positioned the upgrade as a fleetwide connectivity modernisation rather than a single-airline initiative.
