Somalia’s national carrier Somali Airlines is preparing to resume scheduled flights in September from Mogadishu, with the first service expected in mid-September after being grounded since 1991. The comeback is centred on the capital’s airport and is linked to the carrier’s rebuild around two Airbus A320s as the airline moves through final preparations.
The revival fits into broader efforts by Somali aviation officials to restore national institutions and strengthen transport links after decades without a flag carrier. Mogadishu International Airport already handles international services from airlines including Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines, so Somali Airlines would re-enter an active market rather than reopen in isolation.
The carrier’s return has been delayed before, with earlier launch targets in 2023 and late 2025 passing without a restart. Current reporting points to ticket sales beginning by mid-September and an initial route network focused on regional destinations, although no official timetable, route map or confirmed fleet sourcing has been published.
