A Boeing 787 Dreamliner operated by Saudi Arabia’s government has landed at Madeira’s Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport in Funchal for the first recorded arrival of the type on the island. Local reports linked the aircraft to the Saudi royal entourage and said it arrived ahead of an expected visit by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, with the flight also used to check runway procedures at the challenging airport.
The aircraft touched down on 11 August and later carried out further manoeuvres, including multiple landings and take-offs, in what local media described as a reconnaissance or test operation. Madeira airport is regarded as one of Europe’s more demanding fields because of its exposed location and runway layout.
The visit has been tied to a private stay in Madeira, with security preparations reported around Funchal and accommodation arranged at several hotels.
