Doncaster Council has approved a £7.4 million contract for new primary and secondary surveillance radars at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, advancing a key element of the site’s reopening programme in South Yorkshire. Raytheon Systems Ltd, also known as Raytheon UK, will supply and install the equipment in 2027 under a milestone-based payment plan.
Council papers described the radar work as a critical item in the reopening programme, which had previously been judged off track amid funding uncertainty. The new system is intended to support safe and efficient aircraft movement around the airport and strengthen resilience for the air traffic services team.
The procurement covers £7,387,168 and forms part of the wider effort to restore operations at the former commercial airport near Doncaster. The radar package is designed to reduce interference from nearby wind farms and lessen reliance on third-party radar feeds, reflecting the operational demands of the site’s airspace environment.
