Lufthansa’s final A340-600 in Germany departs for Teruel

Lufthansa’s last A340-600 in Germany, D-AIHZ, departed Düsseldorf for Teruel, Spain, on 2 November, ending the airline’s A340-600 operations. The aircraft, operating as flight LH9910, left at 11:30 local time and landed two hours later for storage. Düsseldorf Airport’s fire service gave it a water salute; the crew also waved the aircraft’s wings after take-off.

Lufthansa’s final scheduled A340-600 flights took place on 18 and 19 October. The four remaining aircraft were subsequently moved from Frankfurt to Düsseldorf, where technicians removed components for potential use as spares before the aircraft continued to Teruel. D-AIHZ was the last to leave: the other three departed on 26, 28 and 30 October. Nine former Lufthansa A340-600s are now at the Spanish storage site; they may eventually be dismantled.

The departure removes Lufthansa’s remaining A340-600s from Germany, but the type has not disappeared from the country’s aircraft register. Frankfurt-based Universal Sky Carrier still operates three, including two formerly flown by Lufthansa.
