IndiGo is in early-stage discussions with Embraer about buying 100 regional jets, with an option for around 50 more, in a potential order that could be worth billions of dollars at list prices. No agreement is guaranteed: the aircraft type and final quantity remain undecided, and deliveries would likely begin no earlier than 2030, according to people familiar with the talks.
The potential purchase could give India’s largest airline capacity to add regional routes or replace some ATR turboprops with larger aircraft. IndiGo had 442 aircraft as of September, including 44 ATRs, and is targeting a fleet of around 600 by 2030.
Embraer’s regional jet range includes the E175-E1, which seats up to 88 passengers, and the E190-E2 and E195-E2, with capacities of up to 114 and 146. None has been identified as the aircraft under discussion.
A firm order would give Embraer a major commercial opportunity in India, where Star Air is currently the only Indian airline operating its jets. Embraer and Adani Defence & Aerospace have also signed a non-binding pact to explore an E175 final assembly line in India. Embraer’s chief executive has previously said the plan depends on orders for at least 200 aircraft.
