Swiss plans to phase out its entire Airbus A220 fleet

Swiss plans to withdraw both Airbus A220 variants from its fleet, beginning with the nine A220-100s and eventually ending its operation of the larger A220-300. The remaining four A220-100s are expected to fly through the 2027 summer schedule before leaving service at the start of the following winter schedule. Swiss intends to keep its 21 A220-300s for now, with their exit considered a matter for the 2030s.

Two A220-100s are already being dismantled for parts, while three more have been or are being withdrawn so their engines can support other aircraft. Engine-maintenance difficulties and parts shortages prompted the earlier grounding of the smaller variant. Although those problems are now nearly resolved, Swiss has no plans to return the aircraft to service.

The longer-term fleet decision is part of Swiss’s effort to reduce complexity in its European operations. Maintaining multiple aircraft types increases training requirements for pilots and mechanics, adds spare-parts needs and complicates maintenance. The airline is considering whether the A220-300s could move elsewhere within the Lufthansa Group or to other operators; no transfer arrangements have been settled. Swiss may also consider additional Airbus A320-family aircraft to replace capacity over the medium to long term.
