Airports of Thailand (AoT) plans to double Suvarnabhumi Airport’s annual passenger capacity to 120 million, from about 60 million in fiscal 2026, through a new southern terminal and a fourth runway. Both projects are expected to take six to seven years to complete. AoT intends to submit the fifth development plan to Thailand’s Cabinet alongside the airport’s East Expansion project; neither plan has yet received Cabinet approval.
The East Expansion is further advanced: tender documents are ready, with procurement expected to begin in 2027. The project is forecast to take four years and add capacity for at least 10 million passengers a year by enlarging passenger-service areas, including check-in facilities and baggage conveyor belts. Suvarnabhumi’s current capacity comprises 45 million passengers at the main terminal and 15 million at SAT-1.
AoT also plans to submit a development plan for Don Mueang, Bangkok’s second airport. The budget for its third phase is expected to increase from 36 billion to 69 billion baht, with a target capacity of 40 million passengers annually. AoT president Paweena Jariyathitipong has said the investment programme is intended to meet demand while limiting additional borrowing and the burden on public funds.
