A Learjet 60 crashed in a residential area of Palm Beach County, Florida, on 1 November, killing all nine people aboard. The aircraft had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas for the Bahamas and came down near Military Trail, between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. The FAA and NTSB are investigating; the cause had not been established in the reports available after the crash.
The pilot reported ice accumulation and moderate turbulence before declaring an emergency and describing a rapidly increasing descent rate, according to recorded air traffic control communications reported by CNN. Those transmissions have not established what caused the aircraft to descend or crash.
The crash left a substantial debris field and damaged the surrounding area. No deaths on the ground had been reported, while about 600 people needed shelter because of the damage. The FAA’s preliminary account identified North Eleuthera Airport as the destination; the reports reviewed did not identify the occupants.
