Romania orders mobile Thales radar systems for four air force locations

Romania’s Ministry of National Defence has signed a contract with Thales Romania and Thales LAS France for four mobile radar systems supporting airspace surveillance, aircraft approach and landing. Valued at approximately RON 326.5 million excluding VAT, the order covers equipment for military and civil aircraft, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2028 and all four systems due at Romanian Air Force locations by 2030.

The systems will combine surveillance and approach-control functions, including STAR NG primary surveillance radars with coverage of up to 60 nautical miles, aircraft-identification equipment and Precision Approach Radars. They will track aircraft by day and night in all weather conditions and provide controllers with real-time data on an aircraft’s position relative to the runway and its descent path.

The mobile configuration will allow the Romanian Air Force to move the systems to alternative operating sites, including locations where fixed air-base infrastructure is unavailable or inadequate. The equipment is intended to support approaches and landings in poor visibility while reducing reliance on permanent facilities.

Data will be available to Romanian and NATO air-command-and-control systems, supporting continuous airspace monitoring and interoperability. The four recipient locations have not been publicly identified.
