Qantas zieht Airbus A380 aus Melbourne ab

Qantas has ended scheduled Airbus A380 operations from Melbourne, with the final superjumbo service departing for Los Angeles on 24 October. Flight QF93 was operated by VH-OQH before the aircraft returned to Sydney. The Melbourne–Los Angeles route is now served exclusively by Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, reducing capacity per flight while increasing the frequency to a daily service.

The change cuts the number of seats from 485 on the A380 to 236 on the 787-9. It also removes First Class from the route, meaning passengers can no longer book or upgrade to that cabin on flights between Melbourne and Los Angeles.

The smaller aircraft is being introduced as weaker Economy demand has reduced the commercial case for deploying the A380 on the route. Qantas has indicated that the change is not directly linked to its plan to retire the entire A380 fleet by about mid-2028.

The airline’s remaining A380 operations will be concentrated mainly in Sydney, including increased deployment on the Sydney–Singapore route. The Melbourne change therefore ends Qantas’ regular A380 service from the Victorian capital, but not the type’s scheduled operations in Australia.
