Lufthansa renames Green Fare as Impact Fare amid tighter environmental-claim rules

Lufthansa Group is renaming its Green Fare as Impact Fare to meet tighter requirements for environmental communications. The optional fare remains available across the group’s airlines and travel classes, with the underlying mechanism unchanged: for every booking, Lufthansa commits to adding an extra quantity of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to its operations within six months of the passenger’s departure.

For flights within Europe, the additional SAF volume corresponds to 20% of estimated flight-related CO2 emissions. The fare also funds climate-protection projects outside Lufthansa Group’s value chain, with the contribution based on the remaining 80% for European services. On intercontinental routes, the split is 10% for SAF and 90% for climate projects.

The new name shifts the emphasis from describing the fare as “green” to highlighting the passenger’s contribution to additional sustainability measures. Lufthansa Group has not identified the specific regulation, but the change follows stricter European rules limiting generic environmental claims such as “green”, “environmentally friendly” and “climate-friendly” where they cannot be adequately substantiated.

Introduced in 2023, the fare has been booked by more than five million passengers. Impact Fare customers also receive additional Miles and Points, while selected booking classes and destinations offer more flexible or fee-free rebooking conditions.
