Eurowings rules out short-time work for now in winter 2026/27

Eurowings does not currently plan to introduce short-time work in its German operations during the 2026/27 winter season. A review conducted with Germany’s Federal Employment Agency found that the requirements were not fully met. The Lufthansa subsidiary will nevertheless proceed with plans to cut about 5% of its winter programme as it responds to high fuel costs.

The airline had told staff in October that it was examining short-time work while assessing winter capacity. The latest decision is provisional: the measure is not planned “according to the current assessment”, and Eurowings has not established whether that position will hold throughout the season.

The planned cuts include suspending the newly launched Cologne and Stuttgart–Dubai services. The Berlin–Dubai route is expected to continue, while further reductions are set to affect individual flight frequencies rather than entire routes.

The Lufthansa Group’s point-to-point business, comprising Eurowings and its stake in SunExpress, recorded adjusted EBIT of €214 million in the summer, but was €38 million in deficit after the first nine months. Eurowings has cited higher fuel costs linked to the Middle East conflict, alongside rising German aviation taxes and fees, as pressures on its operations.
