Egyptian carrier AlMasria Universal Airlines plans to add two Airbus A321s to its fleet for services linking Egyptian holiday destinations with Russia. Chief executive Shereen Farid confirmed the intended acquisition in comments to RIA Novosti, although no delivery date was provided. The aircraft are expected to support potential growth in Russia-related leisure traffic, rather than establish a confirmed new route programme.
AlMasria previously considered Airbus A330s for the market but has shifted to the A321, a narrow-body type already used extensively by the airline. The carrier currently operates eight A321s, each configured for 220 passengers, according to Farid. The ownership structure, aircraft source, financing, registration and configuration of the two additional jets have not been disclosed.
The fleet plan follows a memorandum of understanding signed by Russian and Egyptian aviation authorities on 14 October. The agreement enables designated airlines to operate more direct flights between the two countries, but does not identify participating carriers, routes, frequencies or a start date. AlMasria has previously indicated that it would increase Russia services if tourist demand supported the expansion.
The announcement therefore represents an intended fleet increase rather than confirmation of a binding purchase or lease agreement, delivery schedule or launch plan. The two A321s would provide additional capacity for charter or scheduled leisure operations if the bilateral framework leads to higher demand and approved flying rights.
