A rescue helicopter operated by AAA Alpine Air Ambulance was struck by a green laser shortly before landing during an emergency mission in Reinach, Aargau, on Saturday evening. The four-member crew was strongly dazzled during the approach, but completed the landing and medical mission. Three crew members suffered minor eye injuries and received medical treatment after the flight.
The helicopter, reportedly stationed at Birrfeld airfield, had been dispatched shortly after 19:00 for an urgent medical emergency. The laser illuminated the aircraft during the landing phase, when the crew was focused on monitoring the landing area and managing the aircraft’s approach. AAA described the incident as an illegal and highly dangerous interference with aviation safety.
The Aargau Cantonal Police launched an immediate search for the unidentified perpetrator, but the operation was unsuccessful. The investigation remains ongoing, and no arrest has been reported. AAA has indicated that laser attacks involving its helicopters have occurred previously and are consistently reported to the authorities.
The longer-term medical outcome for the three affected crew members was not yet established, although permanent damage was not currently expected. Laser illumination can temporarily impair vision and create a significant hazard during low-level emergency helicopter operations, particularly during approach and landing.
