Saab has secured a SEK 1.3 billion order from Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to develop a new-generation flight-control computer for Gripen fighter aircraft. The replacement for the current system is scheduled for delivery during 2030 and will support the fleet’s long-term availability, performance and security of supply.
The project will be conducted by Saab and FMV in close cooperation. The computer is a central element of Gripen’s flight-control system, enabling safe and precise aircraft manoeuvring.
The order covers development and eventual replacement of the existing computer rather than delivery of new aircraft or a completed aircraft upgrade. Saab has not disclosed the number of computers involved, the specific Gripen variants covered, production quantities or the system’s detailed technical architecture.
Marcus Wandt, head of Saab’s Aeronautics business area, described the replacement as a system intended to support Gripen’s capability and performance for decades. The programme forms part of the Swedish fleet’s longer-term sustainment and modernisation effort, with deliveries planned in 2030.
