Aegean Airlines has appointed Michalis Kouveliotis as chief executive officer with immediate effect, succeeding Dimitris Gerogiannis after 20 years at the helm. Kouveliotis, previously the airline’s chief financial officer and deputy CEO, will lead the Greek carrier as it prepares to expand its Airbus A320-family operation into long-haul markets from 2027, including planned services to India.
Gerogiannis, a founding executive of Aegean, will remain involved as an adviser during the leadership transition. His responsibilities will include oversight of the airline’s technical base and training centre. No separate end date has been given for his advisory role.
Kouveliotis served as CFO for more than two decades, including the period before Aegean’s listing on the Athens Stock Exchange. He became deputy CEO at the beginning of 2025, coordinating the company’s business divisions as part of a succession process prepared over an extended period.
Aegean currently operates 72 Airbus A320-family aircraft. The airline is scheduled to begin longer-range operations with Airbus A321LR aircraft in 2027, while its investment in Spanish carrier Volotea may require further financial support, according to aero.de. The appointment maintains management continuity while transferring executive responsibility to the next generation of leadership.
