Finnair plans to begin commercial flights to Jyväskylä, Joensuu, Kajaani, Kemi and Kokkola at the end of February 2028, when the current state-purchased public-service traffic to the cities is due to end. The airline intends to operate the routes at its own commercial risk, using ATR aircraft and schedules designed to connect with its Helsinki hub. Tickets are expected to go on sale in spring 2027.
The five destinations are currently served under a public-service obligation arrangement. Finnair has not provided route-by-route frequencies, detailed timetables, fares or a precise start date. It plans consistent day-to-day schedules and is considering multi-stop services that could call at two or more cities on a single flight.
The schedules are being developed around onward connections through Helsinki to Finnair’s wider network. The airline has identified efficient scheduling and aircraft utilisation as key considerations for making the services commercially viable. No ATR variant has been specified.
