Fraport secures €8.7 million for Frankfurt ground-power upgrades

Fraport will use about €8.7 million in German federal funding to expand electric ground power and pre-conditioned air (PCA) at Frankfurt Airport. By 2030, the operator aims to provide all 252 aircraft parking positions with either a fixed ground-power connection or access to a mobile battery-electric unit. The funding covers two additional electric ground power units (GPUs) and PCA equipment at 18 positions in Terminal 1’s Concourse A, with installation planned by 2029.

Of the funding, €227,000 will support the purchase of two battery-electric GPUs, taking Fraport’s fleet to 18. Procurement plans call for 22 units by 2029. Fixed 400 Hz connections are not feasible at every stand because of infrastructure constraints, so mobile battery-powered units will serve positions without them.

The remaining €8.5 million is earmarked for PCA systems at 18 Concourse A positions; two positions there already have the equipment. PCA supplies conditioned air to aircraft cabins while they are parked, reducing the need to run kerosene-powered auxiliary power units for climate control. The grant is provided through the federal Bodenstrom-Richtlinie programme, coordinated by NOW GmbH.

Fraport’s targets include reducing Frankfurt Airport’s annual CO₂e emissions to 50,000 tonnes by 2030 and achieving net zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions at fully consolidated Group locations by 2045. The company’s decarbonisation plan comprises around 2,000 measures.
