China reports GJ-21 drone take-off and landing aboard Type 076 ship

China’s state news agency Xinhua reported on 30 October that the GJ-21 stealth reconnaissance-and-strike drone had recently completed its first take-off and landing aboard the Type 076 amphibious assault ship Sichuan. Citing an unnamed navy source, it described the test as the first confirmed operation of the aircraft from the ship. The test date and location were not disclosed.

The reported flights used Sichuan’s electromagnetic catapult and arresting system, a configuration intended to support fixed-wing aircraft alongside the vessel’s amphibious role. The claim establishes that the shipboard arrangement has been used with the GJ-21, but provides no operating parameters or evidence of the aircraft’s readiness for regular deployment.

Sichuan, hull number 51, is China’s first Type 076. Launched on 27 December 2024, it began sea trials in November 2025. The ship has a full-length flight deck, a dual-island superstructure and a full-load displacement of more than 40,000 tonnes. Its planned air wing includes fixed-wing unmanned aircraft and helicopters, alongside amphibious equipment.

The navy source characterised the test as a programme milestone and said the service can now operate fixed-wing stealth drones from large maritime platforms. No details were provided on the GJ-21’s performance during the test or on plans for further trials.
