Romania signs Thales contract for four mobile approach radars

Romania’s Ministry of National Defence has signed a contract with Thales Romania and Thales LAS France for four mobile Ground Controlled Approach radar systems for the Romanian Air Force. Valued at approximately RON 326.5 million (EUR 65.6 million), excluding VAT, the agreement covers staged deliveries from 2028, with all systems due to enter service by 2030.

The systems will be assigned to four Romanian Air Force locations, which have not been disclosed. Their mobile configuration will allow operations to move to alternative sites, reducing dependence on fixed air-base infrastructure and supporting continuity during disruption or changing operational requirements.

The package comprises STAR NG primary surveillance radars, RSM NG/IFF secondary surveillance and aircraft-identification systems, and four Precision Approach Radars. The equipment will identify and track military and civilian aircraft and provide controllers with real-time data for approach and landing, including in poor weather and low visibility. STAR NG offers approach-control coverage of up to 60 nautical miles.

Data will be transmitted continuously to Romanian and NATO command-and-control systems. The radars are designed for day-and-night operation in difficult weather and hostile electromagnetic environments. Thales Romania and local industrial partners are expected to support installation, integration and long-term sustainment.
